  • What is nostrification?

Nostrification is the official process for recognizing educational qualifications obtained outside the EU, the EEA or Switzerland. In Austria, the equivalence of such foreign qualifications is assessed differently depending on the occupational field. In the healthcare sector, the nostrification procedure is carried out either by the universities of applied sciences or the competent authorities of the provincial governments. The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that the foreign qualifications meet Austrian standards and enable graduates to work or pursue further education in the relevant field in this country. Depending on the specific requirements of the occupational field, this may also involve taking additional examinations or meeting further criteria.

  • What is recognition?

The recognition procedure is based on the following criteria: You have successfully completed your training in an EU member state, an EEA state or Switzerland and hold a diploma, certificate or other proof of qualification from one of these countries. Alternatively, you hold a diploma from a non-EU/EEA country and are licensed to practice the healthcare profession in question in an EU member state, EEA state or Switzerland. In addition, you are able to provide evidence of at least three years of legally compliant and professionally relevant activity in the respective country.

  • What is the difference between recognition and nostrification?

The terms “recognition” and “nostrification” are not synonymous, and they are used differently. You will have to go through either a recognition or nostrification procedure, depending on which country you obtained your degree in.

To summarize, the recognition process is usually simpler and more direct, while the nostrification process is more detailed and specific to certain countries or regions, with a stronger focus on the full integration and acceptance of the foreign qualification in the local system.

For more details, see “What is nostrification?” and “What is recognition?”

  • Why is nostrification necessary for nurses from non-EU countries?

Nostrification serves as a guarantee that the international qualifications of carers comply with local standards and legislation, so that the carers can work legally in the country in question.

  • Who is eligible for nostrification?

Carers with international qualifications who have completed an accredited degree program and wish to work in a European country that recognizes their degree. Eligibility status may be country-specific.

  • What documents are usually required for nostrification?

Degree certificate, transcripts, proof of clinical training, proof of professional experience, identity documents, professional registration and licenses, legal and health documents, application papers and supporting documents. Please be aware that all documents require a legalization procedure, an apostille, authentication and/or a certified translation.

  • Do I need to take a language test?

Yes, most countries require a language test in the corresponding local language. Proof of English language skills is also required, even if no test is conducted in the local language.

  • What happens if there are discrepancies between my original documents and the translated versions?

Discrepancies between the original documents and the translated versions can lead to delays in the nostrification process. To avoid any issues, please ensure that the translations are accurate and have been certified by a qualified translator or a translation service approved by the competent regulatory authority.

  • Do I have to complete additional training after nostrification?

Some countries may require you to acquire additional skills if they are necessary in the destination country and you currently lack them.
